Q: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

A: I was actually thinking about this the other day. My reading habits change all the time!

I go through stages. A few months back I was at the stage where I was craving science fiction novels that were set in space, alas I read Across the Universe, A Million Suns, Inside Out and Enders Game.

Then I was on a Dystopian kick reading Divergent and The Selection (Very light dystopian this one…), then I went on the hunt for more dystopian books and ended up requesting a few from the library like Enclave and Legend.

Right now I’m in a High/Epic Fantasy / Historical Fiction/Romance/Fantasy kick. I just finished Grave Mercy, I’m currently reading Graceling, The Girl with the Fire and Thorns is next in my to be read pile and I’m looking forward to reading the Throne of Glass eNovella’s before I get to The Throne of Glass. Not to mention I’ve requested A Game of Thrones from my library.

I’m pretty sure my next kick will be Aliens as Obsidian and Whispers in Autumn are in my to be read pile right now and are going to be read sometime soon!

As for my mood. Well I find that I have to be in a certain mood to read different genre’s. If I’m in a bad mood I can not for the life of me read a book that is complicated, makes me emotional or, in some cases, there is no action and only talking. Because I get bored and put the book down, then sometimes never pick it up again because I associate that book with my bad mood…

I think I’m always in the mood for a good paranormal romance though.

My reading habits definitely change all the time! Just perhaps not always by my mood.

What about you? Do your reading habits change?

Miss J

  1. I get on reading kicks, too! I just finished a mature-YA reading kick, although I hope to find time for more in that genre later this Fall.

Already a follower via Linky and a new follower via RSS.

    Happy Friday!

  2. I find that favorite authors are best for bad moods! When I’m tirelessly bored it does take me a while to find a book that will spark my interest enough to read, even though it may be a fantastic book and one that I really enjoy later.

I hate my bored moods. They’re the worst!

    Following via Linky!

  3. It’s like reading my own thoughts! I have read most of the books you’ve mentioned and spent quite awhile in sci-fi land earlier this year! If you like high fantasy, yes, Game of Thrones (and the first three books in that series) are amazing. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, is even better.

Thanks for stopping by! Glad you found me and cyber stalking you back!

  4. Great answer to the FF! I think all of those books you mentioned are either on my TBR or I’ve read them! I loved Grave Mercy and Game of Thrones is one of my absolute FAVES! (I love high fantasy!) If you like that one you should also try Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series (Book 1: The Eye of the World). It’s tamer than GoT but just as awesome! My FF is at LKHill or Musings on Fantasia if you’re interested. Happy Friday! :D

  5. Yes, I go through phases too. Sometimes I just read way too much of a particular genre at once and then I need something else for a little while :)

  6. Thanks for becoming a follower of my site. I’m now following you back via Linky and wish you a great reading weekend.

    The Scarf Princess

  7. i also associate my moods with my books, ha. and if im just not feeling “into” a book, ive been known to put it down in frustration.

  9. I do that sometimes, too. And, paranormal romance is usually always at least one of my reads each week.
