Reconnaissance is book two in the New Dawn series, I loved book one, Colonization.
In Reconnaissance we get to read Nova as our main character. Nova is extremely jealous of Andromeda and recent events, she’s even more angrier that her own life partner Sirius chose to trust Andromeda over her, she’s humiliated that Sirius betrayed her that way. Nova’s off outside cooling her head when she hears an extremely loud noise; a noise that The New Dawn couldn’t possibly make. After going exploring she discovers a huge alien ship over Planet 21’s forest beaming up the crystals that the colony need to help sustain life on the planet.
Nova finds herself the expedition leader assigned to discovering what this alien ship wants and on the colony’s life to make a peace with it. With Sirius as the navigator and other highly qualified team members they make their way to the ship, only to get beamed into the ship themselves and realise that they just might be in a whole heap of danger.
I rather enjoyed reading how Nova and Sirius tried to survive the aliens. The arachnids as they called them were scary and grossed me out, yet interesting to read about as they were more than just spider looking creatures with brain sacks on their backs. I liked that they had a bigger purpose and a whole back story, it added depth.
Although I found it hard to like Nova, I couldn’t quite connect with her. I felt sorry for her at the beginning when we learn her family isn’t as functional as everyone thinks but that’s only because she never lets anyone find out, but I hated how she pitied herself and thought she wasn’t good enough for Sirius to love. Considering he had only just declared his love for Andromeda not too long ago. It was nice getting to see where their relationship led them.
The aliens ship was interesting and I had fun reading the action and the ending but I did feel like it was a little bit slow to start off with. Once the story progressed the pace took off and I found myself wanting to read more and more.
Overall I enjoyed Reconnaissance, I’m interested in seeing where this story goes. Especially after all of the hints that happened near the end of this book!
