F&F: I do not recommend reading this book. Ever.

Q: Tell us about a book that you didn’t like and why we shouldn’t read it (as nicely and respectfully as possible)

A: I had to think really hard to answer this question, I don’t usually finish books that I don’t like so there are very few books that I’ve read and can honestly say to you to never pick it up. I finally thought of one that I read a long time ago.

Fallen by Lauren Kate

I really disliked this book for a lot of reasons.
I think you should never read this book because:

+ It is long winded which makes it boring.
+ The reader figures out the reveal from the blurb on the back of the book yet the main character, Luce, doesn’t figure it out till 400 pages in.
+ There is insta-love. Luce falls for Daniel the first time she sees him – by which he gives her the finger. And she’s in love. What the hell? Seriously, what the hell?!
+ Daniel constantly treats Luce horribly yet she still ‘loves’ him.

+ Most of the book is about Luce fixating and obsessing over Daniel and where he is at every moment of the day. She even stalks him most of the time because he won’t have anything to do with her.
+ Luce is kept blind and ignorant the whole time.
+ Everything happens in the end of the book.
+ No character is likable. Luce is portrayed as a weak, crazy damsel in distress that can’t live without a boy loving her, and Daniel is portrayed as a douche bag that gets away with being a douche bag.

What book do you recommend never reading?

Q: If you could hang out with any author (living) who would it be and what would you want to do?

A: Oh my gosh, so hard to choose!

Cynthia Hand.

Honestly? Something boring like have lunch and a coffee. Then we could just chat!

Who would you hang out with?

Q: We are about to see a lot of posts & tweets about reader conventions, RT, BEA, ALA and many more are starting soon. Which one would you love to attend? Where and why?

A: I think this is a question that I don’t find is very relevant to me. Mainly because I live in New Zealand and obviously that’s a tad far for me to travel, as well as highly expensive. Although BEA is in New York? If it were even possible I would attend BEA and then stay for a few weeks just so I could hang out in New York!

I think if I had the chance to go to any reader convention I would look into going. I do get jealous when I see everyone is posting about their time at these conventions. But because I’m in NZ I’ve never put any more thought or action into it.

What conventions would you like to attend?

Q: Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate — ? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?

A: I only do this if it’s a book that has been getting high reviews.

I’ve done this twice.

The first book ended up being a book I am now in love with. Unearthly.

The second book I read recently. When I decided to read this certain book it was because everyone loved it, said book was getting high ratings and rave reviews. I thought I would give it a go, and hoped I would love it.
I really did not like it.
I should have gone with my instincts.
Yet I pushed my way to the end which is a miracle with books I’m not enjoying, after all I just wrote a whole post stating how life is too short to read books you aren’t enjoying. I decided I wasn’t going to carry on with the series (Obviously).

Although I will probably do this again, after all it’s been 50/50 so far. But I promise you, if I really do start to hate it I will DNF it before my gut tells me ‘I told you so!’.

Have you ever read a book you thought you would hate?

Q: Books are turned into movies all the time! Turn it around. What movie would make a great book?

A: Ohhh so I can think of a T.V show that could be cool as a book series!

Revolution! A world where there is no electricity? Ohh the possibilities.

Ohh and don’t you just love Billy Burke in this T.V show? I can’t look at him as Charlie in Twilight the same way now haha.

What movie (T.V show in my case) do you think would be a good book?

Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

A: Umm I think something that I’ve come across lately is when it’s at the end of a chapter something huge is happening and I’m dying to continue reading to find out what happens. But then the last line of the chapter gives away the outcome before it even happens, making me fine with putting the book down because I practically know the gist.

I think it’s meant to make you want to read more to find out how it happens but I find it does the opposite for me. It takes away the urgency of wanting to read the next chapter then and there. It completely deflates the excitement of the situation because the reader already knows how it will turn out, they just don’t know the exact details.

I like being kept in the dark until it happens so then I’m shocked or surprised. It’s way more fun that way!

And then of course insta-love is a HUGE trick that annoys me.

What irritates you the most?

Q: What are you reading right now? How do you like it?

A: I just finished The Lure of Shapinsay by Krsita Holle which was a pretty cool story about selkies.

Right now I’m reading Fire by Kristin Cashore. And I love it! I loved Graceling a lot but had heard that Fire was different so I expected to not enjoy it as much. I’m glad to say my expectations were wrong.

What are you reading right now?

Q: What would you do over if you were to start your blog again from scratch?

A: Honestly? I think I would use blogger instead of wordpress.

Purely because the free version of blogger doesn’t seem to have as many limits as wordpress.com, and I don’t think I’m going to move over to wordpress.org for a while yet as it sounds a little complicated for me right now.

For example wordpress.com doesn’t allow java or flash or certain codes etc because of security measures. Which is completely fair enough and understandable!

Still, that means I can’t use rafflecopter or the various versions of linky tools (The list thingy’s) on my blog, I can link to linky tools but can’t display the list. I’m not sure if I can link to rafflecopter but I’m going to figure that out so I can see what my options for hosting give-a-ways are. But that also means it’s one extra click that could be off putting for passing through readers.

My only option is to host my own blog. I’m still learning the ins and outs of blogging so I know that won’t happen for at least a while yet. I definitely hope it happens sometime though :)

Still, I wouldn’t change anything else. I’ve had lots of fun since I started this blog! I do think I need to find a comfortable way of balancing my blog and the rest of my life though.. I spend so much time on here! Haha.

What would you do differently?
